I'll level with you here. I was a real latecomer to the world of wine.
I had always been into craft beer and whisky but with wine that switch had just never been flicked.
I think part of that is just maybe never having tasted a really nice wine. Your typical 'house wine' in your average restaurant is usually pretty uninteresting and maybe that's what it came down to.
Wine certainly wasn't a drink that was commonly shared among my friends anyway.
It wasn't until a family holiday near Bordeaux in my late 20’s that wine started to appeal to me and appeal in a big way!
We weren't there for the wine. There just happened to be the perfect Airbnb near Bergerac, next to the Dordogne. Really beautiful countryside and quaint picturesque villages and chateaux aplenty!
None of us were big wine drinkers, but we did a few wine tastings. I mean it would be weird to visit the Bordeaux area and not do one or two right!?
And a couple of the wines really hit the spot. One sweet white wine in particular had us all lining up in the shop to fill our bags. A Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend very similar to Sauternes.
I still have one of the bottles actually. It reminds me of a great time with people I rarely see and it's also the exact moment I became fascinated with wine.

This was my 'gateway' wine in Bordeaux.
Fast forward to today and wine is a huge part of my life.
I’ve got my WSET Level 2 award in wine (with distinction I may add 😉), I’m currently studying for the WSET Level 3 award, I co-wrote a book on wine, and I’m now running things here at WineTurtle.com.

The next step is to make Wine Turtle a physical presence and open a wine shop and tasting venue in my home town (it needs one!) but that’s for another day. I’ll keep you posted on our socials of any developments anyway.
If you want to keep up to date with life here at Wine Turtle I post daily on our Instagram page and once or twice a week on our YouTube channel. There’s also our email newsletter that goes out twice per month. Links below.
